About Houston Kappa League (HKL)

Houston kappa league has been present since 2000 - providing exceptional enrichment and leadership development opportunities to youth in the greater Houston area. We offer youth an opportunity to create and mold their own unique experiences through our wide range of educational and leadership activities. We see the true power that our youth hold, and we have made it our mission to transform them into natural born leaders, ready to take on the world.

Kappa League is a subset of the Guide Right, our National Service Initiative. Under the chairmanship of Mel Davis, the Los Angeles Alumni Chapter’s Social Action Program took the form of training activity for young men of the Alain Leroy Locke High School. Called the Kappa Instructional Leadership League, it was designed to help young men grow, receive, and develop their leadership talents in every phase of human endeavor. It provided both challenging and rewarding experiences, which richly enhanced their lives. Membership was open to male students from the tenth through the twelfth grades. The fraternity sought to help these young men to achieve worthy goals for themselves and make constructive contributions to their community when leadership roles become the responsibility.

Kappa League was founded on Thursday, February 12, 1969, by the Los Angeles Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., at Alain LeRoy Locke High School. Kappa League was adopted by the Grand Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. at the 56th Grand Chapter which was held August 12-15, 1970. The founders of the Kappa Instructional Leadership League were Mel L. Davis and Edgar H. Bishop, an Elder Watson Diggs Awardee.

Kappa League is a program for the educational, occupational and social guidance of male students in grades 6th-12th.

7 Ways to Become an Exceptional Leader

We instill the ability to persevere and overcome challenges is key to success in work and relationships. For example, kids may struggle to grasp a concept or game but continue to play or study until they improve. Teaching kids to keep trying and not just shoot for the win contributes to their future success. Perseverance is one of the most important leadership qualities for kids to master, as it sets the foundation for all skill acquisition.

Meet Our New Leadership Coach!

In addition to development, and building character;  raising money, you might also want to see the level of “engagement or awareness goals” such as:

  • Acquiring new enguaged donors.

  • Promoting our cause or gaining publicity.

  • Stewarding existing donors.

  • Engaging prospective major donors.

  • Reconnecting with lapsed supporters.

  • Recognizing volunteers or recurring donors.

No matter what your goals are, make sure that you can quantify them. When you have a metric for success clearly outline, it’s easier to measure how well your event does and target areas to improve going forward.
